The Fat Loss 4 Idiots diet is based on a principle called calorie shifting. Calorie shifting insists that you continue to eat a normal, healthy amount of calories everyday, but spread it out over more meals. The idea is to eat smaller meals but eat more meals. Eating in this way prevents your body from storing excess calories as fat and also releases hormones that cause you to slowly burn the fat that you already carry.

Calorie shifting diets are different that Low-Calorie diets, where the idea is to eat less than your normal daily intake. When you drastically drop the amount of calories you eat, your body quickly responds by slowing down its metabolism. With your metabolism slowed down, you are less able to burn fat, and thus low-calories diets often fail.

With calorie shifting, you continue to eat a normal amount of calories and thus your metabolism stays at a normal rate. With your metabolism at a normal rate, you are more likely to burn stored fat.

In addition to providing your body with a normal amount of calories, calorie-shifting diets ensure that you are getting all your required daily nutrients. This can be a problem with low-calorie diets where a dramatic reduction in calories also means a dramatic reduction in nutrient intake. Missing out on key nutrients is obviously unhealthy, and is another reason why extreme low calories diets are not a good idea.
